A child’s understanding of their parents’ divorce
Divorce is a challenging concept for children to understand. Emma’s parents are divorced but she doesn’t understand why her dad has to live in a different house. She doesn’t know any other moms and dads that don’t live together. Her mom tells her that there are many different types of families.
The mornings are the hardest time for Emma. She thrashes about in her messy room looking for clothes to wear. As she starts to get ready for school, her drawers give her an interesting insight.
When at school, a friend tells her that she is not alone in learning to live her life differently.
Through playful imagination, Emma is encouraged to come to terms with her new way of living. She learns that surprising insights can show up in the most peculiar places and times.
DIFFERENT FAMILIES, DIFFERENT DRAWERS is recommended for 4 to 10 year olds. A child-centred story, it can also couple as a resource for parents, teachers and therapists who work with children experiencing trauma from divorce.
— ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Through her early years, Vivian’s love for the written word was a way to unravel her deeper thoughts. With time, her passion morphed into a 30-year career as a Professional Certified Coach, where her writings focused on helping children and adults understand their needs and life choices.
Recently she pivoted into full-time writing. “Different Families, Different Drawers” is the first in a series of three books intended to support children dealing with their parents’ separation and divorce.
The books are also offered as a resource for parents, teachers and therapists, who work with kids suffering from the trauma of divorce.
“As spring emerges into summer and the lawns and fields fill with golden dandelions, young children spend much time picking and presenting the colourful weeds to their favourite adults. When the golden heads turn to white fluff , those same young children delight in blowing the dandelion seeds into the world. To provide a permanent recollection of such memories, Vivian Hitchman has written a delightful, fanciful adventure of a young girl called Toni.”
